Women's Welsh Club
The Women's Welsh Club Print E-mail

The Women's Welsh Club meets at Rutgers Church on the first Saturday of each month (except January, July, August, and Septembers) at 1:30 p.m.

The club is one of several groups founded after World War I. The purpose was to give Welsh people a place to meet other Welsh people, to get the latest news from home (letters took several weeks by ship), and to help keep meaningful Welsh traditions going - i.e., the gymanfa ganu, a joyful musical service of praise, and local eisteddfods (festivals of competitions for poetry, writing, music, etc.). A home for the aged, The Welsh Home, was founded, and received support from each club.

Today, "home" isn't so far away - but our WWC is still a place to meet other Welsh, and to enjoy a musical or dramatic program and a "cuppa." We continue to send a yearly gift to The Welsh Home, and to send Christmas cards to the residents. We are a member of the Snowdonia Society, which helps to preserve that beautiful part of Welsh history. We gave a gift to the British Heritage Memorial Garden in lower Manhattan, in honor of fellow Brits who died on Sept. 11th. Our members include people born in Wales, people with ancestors from Wales, and people who love "pethau Cymraeg" - everything Welsh. We extend a warm welcome to all to join us on the first Saturday of the month (except for Jan. and Sept.)
